ANDREW OH (Album Reviews)

"Already a certified hitmaker in Australia, saxophonist Andrew Oh looks to prove his chop to wider audiences with an eponymously titled solo effort. Even when his material isn't quite worthy, Oh makes it worth a listen through his delivery - stretching and bending past the typical romantic syrup on the soprano, anti growling and diving with edgy immediacy on tenor and alto. Oh's special talents take a totally ordinary arrangement like "Turn Up the Heat" (typical chord changes, typical R&B background vocals, typical breaks) and make it swing with his exuberant trills. When the material matches, however, the saxist really catches fire- evidenced on the bluesy soulful "Far Away from Me," with a hooky melody that a Levi Stubbs-caliber vocalist could easily wander into. Likewise, the Julia Fordham-penned "Happily Ever After," arranged as a spacious, jungle waltz with bass and tribalpercussion echoing, is wrapped in Oh's snaking, intriguing soprano line." Hillary Grey, JazzTimes

"Another shot has been fired across the bow of the Nashville Smooth jazz scene, celebrating a brand new face in the format. Guitarist Denny Jiosa and our friend Michael Moryc hit the studio to produce newcomer saxophonist Andrew Oh's self-titled debut. Oh has a robust tone and moves deftly between tenor, alto and soprano. Whether it's the robust tenor tones of "It's Time," the sensual soprano smatterings of "Autumn in April," or the more adventurous alto rhythms and changes on 'Inside Out." Smooth Jazz programmers can easily roll with Andrew Oh." Keith Zimmerman, Gavin Smooth Jazz

"Be certain to check out Andrew Oh's distinctive, self-titled CD. This sax player has created a lyrical, deep project with production assistance from Denny Jiosa and Michael Moryc. Oh's cover of "Happy Ever After" sounds like an absolute natural, but "Turn Up The Heat," "Autumn In April," and "I Can't Stop Dreaming" have strong appeal, too." Carol Archer, Nac/Smooth Jazz Albums
